Eoghan Rua Cill Chua Notes week ending 13th June

Corn an Duin action continued on Friday for our senior men with a rare game for them away to Drumgath.

It turned out to be a poor game, Kilcoo kicking numerous chances short and wide throughout against a deep lying Drumgath defence.

We led 0-7 to no score at half time and could only manage a goal in the second half ,an opportunist effort by Donal Kane. The home team finally got on the scoresheet on the 40th minute, and they added 3 more before full time in a real damp squib. Scorers for Mickey Morans team on the night were, Chrissy Rooney 0-3, Marty Devlin 0-2, Aaron Branagan 0-2 and Donal Kane 1-0.

Well done to the senior Camogs who got back to winning ways last week with a 2-6 to 2-5 win over Kilclief Ben Dearg.

The minor footballers were in action away too RGU Downpatrick last week and were involved in a cracking encounter against the county town hosts. Unfortunately the home side ran out 3 point winners in the 9 goal thriller.

Our under 15s drew with Bryansford away while the ever improving under 13s best StPaul’s in Hollywood last Tuesday.

In girls football our under 11s lost by five in Liatroim while the under 15s beat Rostevor by 3, 4-7 to 4-4 in Petit Park.

Friends of Kilcoo Mourne Challenge 26th June

Route

This year’s mourne challenge will start in Donard park Newcastle and the course will start up through Donard wood passing the first second and third bridges. From the third bridge it’s a steady walk up the glen river path all the way to the saddle, eventually reaching the Donard/commadagh stile. From here walkers will climb the first mountain Slieve Commadagh, from its summit and crossing the stile it’s a downhill walk all the way to Hares gap (mourne wall will be to your right).

From Hares gap it’s a big climb up Slieve Bernagh (this section will be flagged) and from Bernaghs stunning summit it’s a rocky downhill walk to the meelmore/bernagh stile. Crossing the stile, walkers will continue down between Bernagh and Meelmore to the trassy trail and eventually to the road at Trassey car park. The remaining 3 miles will go via Christy Devlin’s lane up to the Bryansford road, then down McCleans close onto the Tullaree road, another road section towards kilcoo, before going down Mcgreevys lane, and eventually to the club for some refreshments.
