Eoghan Rua Cill Chua Notes week ending 16th May

It was with great delight that our footballers and Camogs at all ages returned to competitive action this week with most results going the way of the Magpies. Many thanks to the mentors, Covid officers and personnel involved with each of our teams who not only ensured the safe return but also facilitated coaching and planning for games leading to this point. It’s been a long spell with the club gates closed but hopefully now we are on the road to recovery in terms of Covid 19 and our wonderful games will

Flourish once more. We also hope our brilliant support network will be allowed to attend games in the very near future.

Our senior Camogs were the first team in league action last Monday and what a performance first off. They made the long trip to Ballycran and came away with a resounding win, scoring 6 goals on a wet and windy evening. Ballycran 1-6 Cill Chua 6-13

The senior ladies under new manager Brian Devlin also made a winning start to their 2021 campaign on Saturday defeating Carryduff B at home 5-8 to 1-5.

Laura Morgan scored two first half goals to set them on their way to victory and further majors from Chara Laverty and two from Shanna Fettes in the last 15 minutes helped Kilcoo cap off a fine performance. Catriona Devlin notched 0-4 also in what was a good opening day win.

In men’s football the new Corn an Duin competition got under way on Friday with an away trip to Liatriom first up for Mickey Morans team. First half goals from Justin Clarke and Darryl Branagan helped the magpies go in leading 2-10 to 0-3 at the break and afterwards it continued to be one way traffic with the home side failing to score. Kilcoo added another 1-9, Donal Kane grappling the goal in what was an easy victory against a young Fontenoys team.

The thirds team followed up the ladies teams and senior men’s with finding the net with great regularity on Sunday evening in Longstone, finding it 5 times in a high scoring 5-9 to 3-9 win. The team has a great mixture of youth and experience with a number of men making their debut at this grade.

At underage level we had two wins from 3 in boys football, the minors and Under 13s defeating Cumann Pheadair Naofa and Teconnaght respectively while the under 11.5 lads lost away to Carryduff.

In LGFA, the under 11.5 girls had a five point win over Bryansford while our minors edged out derby rivals Castlewellan by a goal. The other girls game of the past week too place on Sunday morning with the under 15s being defeated by Bosco in Newry, 6-5 to 4-4.
